Allpahuayo Mishana and Pacaya Samiria National Reserves

Exceptional program for birdwatchers that enables them to visit two protected areas in which they will find countless avian species including those that are endemic and recent discoveries.

Itinerary

Day 1: ... (Lima) / Iquitos / Allpahuayo Mishana National Reserve (L-D)

• Arrival in the morning to the Iquitos Airport. Greet, meet and transfer to the Allpahuayo-Mishana National Reserve located 15 miles SW from Iquitos (1 hour) near the road that connects this city with Nauta.

• Arrival to the reserve and room accommodations at the Research Center facilities.

• Jungle trail hike in the morning to begin the spotting.

• Lunch at the Research Center facilities.

• Continue hiking and spotting in the afternoon. This reserve is renowned for being the habitat of some endemic species.

• Dinner and overnight at the Research Center facilities.
  
  Allpahuayo Mishana endemic species: Ancient or Gentry’s Antwren (Herpsicochmus gentryi) Mishana Tyrannulet (Zimmerius villarejoi) Northern Chestnut-tailed Antbird (Mirmeciza castena centucolorum) Iquitos Gnatcatcher (Polioptila clementsi) Allpahuayo Antbird (Pernocstola arenarum).

Day 2: Allpahuayo Mishana National Reserve (B-L-D)

• Early morning hike in search of other species such as manakins and trogon-barbets. You also might be able to see poison frogs (Dendrobates).

• Breakfast at the Research Center facilities.

• Walk near the Iquitos - Nauta Road to see parakeets and parrots, as well as caciques, oropendolas, tanangers and pompadour cotinga feeding on the fruit trees that grow along the way.

• Lunch.

• In the afternoon, continue walking on different trails where not only birds can be found, but also different kinds of primates.

• Dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Allpahuayo Mishana National Reserve / Pacaya Samiria National Reserve (B-L-D)

• Breakfast.

• Overland transfer to the town of Nauta’s wharf (approximately 1 hour).

• Upstream boating on the Marañon River to the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve (50 miles SW/approximately 2 hours and a half from Nauta).

• Watch diverse species of birds along the way, including egrets, hawks, horned screamers, jacanas, parrots and parakeets. It is also possible to see Amazon River dolphins.

• Box lunch onboard.

• Passenger identification at the reserve’s entrance check-point.

• Arrival in the Arequipa community where the first camp will be set up.

• Dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Pacaya Samiria National Reserve (B-L-D)

• Early morning boat excursion on the Yanayacu - Pucate Rivers to observe parrots, toucans, caracaras, macaws, horned-screamers and scavangers whose habit is found on the river shores.

• Breakfast at the camp.

• Hike on flood forest where is possible to find the “shansho” or hoatzin feeding on tree leaves on oxbow lake shores.

• Lunch.

• Explore the reserve boating on the Yanayacu - Pucate River and set the camp on the next site.

• Evening excursion to spot caimans and nocturnal birds like the common and great potoos, plus owls of different kinds.

• Dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Pacaya Samiria National Reserve (B-L-D)

• Early in the morning watch the birds as they come out of their nests to feed on the food the river provides, among them cotingas, macaws, parrots, king vultures and maybe even the Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja).

• Breakfast at the camp.

• Hike on jungle trail where it can be possible to spot hummingbirds, mahakins, antwrens, flycatchers, tanangers and finches amongst others.

• Lunch.

• Return trip begins with campsite setting to spend the last night near the mouth of the Yanayacu-Pucate at the Maranon River.

• Dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Pacaya Samiria National Reserve / Nauta / Iquitos (B)

• Breakfast at camp.

• Return by boat to Nauta navigating on the Marañon river.

• Overland return to Iquitos.

• Transfer to your hotel in Iquitos or to the airport at a convenient time to board your flight.
