Birdwatching Program in
Private Reserve in the Yarapa River Rainforest

Interesting birdwatching program to one of the highest avian diversity sites. The private reserve is located between the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve and the Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo, two protected areas that stand out because of their rich biodiversity.

Itinerary

Day 01: Iquitos / Nauta / Tambo Amazonico Lodge (Private Reserve on the Yarapa River )* (L-D)

  • Meet and greet at the airport from where you will be transferred to our operations office in Iquitos. Along the way you will briefly sightsee the tourist highlights of the city

  • Transfer to Nauta town’s river wharf (approximately 62 miles SW /2 hours from Iquitos) to start the boat trip to our Tambo Amazonico Lodge.

  • Box lunch onboard.

  • Navigate down the Maranon River and pass the confluence with the Ucayali River, where the Amazon River is born, continuing to the Yarapa River where the lodge is located (2 and a half hours approximately).

  • Arrival to the Tambo Amazonico (75Km. SW of Iquitos). The lodge is within a 11-sq.mile private protected area, next to the Pacaya Samiria National National Reserve "outer" or "buffer zone".

  • Walk or canoe ride to identify the Yarapa Watershed ecosystems.

  • Dinner at Tambo Amazonico.

  • Overnight.

* Tambo Amazonico Lodge is located on the Yarapa River, which flows parallel to the Ucayali and later pours into the Amazon. Considered as the gateway to the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, this floodable jungle area with countless of fish abounding oxbow lakes is an excellent place for birdwatching, as numerous species feed on its waters: the Great Egret (Casmerodius albus), the Snowy Egret (Egreta thula) and the White Necked Heron (Ardea cocoi). There are some others that feed on aquatic plants like the Horned Screamer (Anhima cornuta) and the Hoatzin (Opisthocomus oatzin); you can also find raptors as the Great Black Hawk (Buteogallus urubitinga), the Black Collar Hawk (Busarellus negricolis) and the Snail Kite(Rostramus sociabilis).

Day 02: Tambo Amazonico Lodge (B-L-D)

  • Boat ride on the Yarapa River to observe species such as the Ringed King Fisher (Ceryle torquata), the Amazon King Fisher (Chlorocelyle amazona), the Wattled Jacana (Jacana jacana) and some raptors.

  • Spot the particular and mythic pink Amazon River dolphins.

  • Breakfast at the lodge.

  • Jungle trail hike to observe different kind of birds such as antwrens, toucans, parrots, cuckoos, woodpeckers and others.

  • Lunch.

  • In the afternoon, canoe ride to one of the black water oxbow lakes to watch for horned-screamers, oropendolas and some scavengers. Optional fishing of red or black piranha, sabalo and peacock bass which abound in this area.

  • Evening canoe ride on the Yarapa River to spot nocturnal birds as owls and potoos; you may also spot caimans.

  • Dinner.

  • Overnight.

Day 03: Tambo Amazonico Lodge (B-L-D)

  • Walk on the surroundings of Tambo Amazonico and visit the tree parrots and macaws have turned into their “lick” where they gather early in the morning.

  • Breakfast.

  • Jungle trekking to find bird species like the Cuvier’s Toucan (Pteroglossus), the Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao), the Blue and Yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna), the Yellow Headed Caracara (Milvago chimachima), and the King Vulture (Sarcoramphus papa), amongst others.

  • Lunch at the lodge.

  • Afternoon boat excursion on the Yarapa River and nearby oxbow lakes to see more aquatic bird species like egrets, cormorants and ducks.

  • Visit to a riverside village to learn people’s lifestyle and forest survival activities.

  • Dinner and overnight.

Day 04: Tambo Amazonico Lodge / Nauta / Iquitos (B)

  • Breakfast at Tambo Amazonico Lodge

  • Return by boat to Nauta navigating on the Amazon and Marañon rivers. Overland return to Iquitos.

  • Transfer to your hotel in Iquitos or to the airport at a convenient time to board your flight.
